DuPont Performance Elastomers, Hall 9, Stand H36-H38, ACHEMA 2006 DuPont Performance Elastomers claims long-term cost savings with Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer seals ![]() Download Graph (jpg) Spider chart shows comparative performance of DuPont Performance Elastomers Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 and Kalrez® Spectrum™ 7075 perfluoroelastomer parts versus EPDM and FKM in the most aggressive CPI environments. Frankfurt am Main, Mai 15, 2006 - - “Affordability” of Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) sealing parts is a keynote of DuPont Performance Elastomers’ message to the chemical process industry at ACHEMA 2006. The company provides user cost data to prove that Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 and Kalrez® Spectrum™ 7075 – recommended for the most difficult process sealing environments – can lead to savings of up to 98 per cent in total system running costs, in comparison with alternative sealing materials, through greatly extended seal lifetime, lower maintenance and reduced process downtime. According to DuPont Performance Elastomers (DPE), Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 enables users to standardize around one instead of several sealing products in inventory because of its broad chemical, temperature and pressure resistance , while Kalrez® Spectrum™ 7075 offers extended seal life, superior sealing force retention, and the ultimate in thermal resistance of up to 327°C, in the most aggressive CPI environments. Substantial savings “When considering the economics of Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer seals it is essential to look beyond the initial cost of the seal itself and compare the total system cost related to how long and how effectively it solves the sealing problem. Total system cost is defined as the sum of the cost of the O-ring seal + installation cost + downtime cost, including loss of productivity through leakage, + clean-up costs. In a seal failure situation, the total financial burden can be punitive, but equally, long seal life can be the key to substantial savings,” said Rudy van Engen, business manager, Kalrez® Europe. He cited a report from a global agrochemical producer confirming that static O-ring seals of PTFE exposed to aggressive solvents, surfactants and concentrated herbicides on its filling line required daily replacement. By switching to O-ring seals of Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375, the company has been able to extend seal lifetime to an average of two months before replacement, an improvement of some 6,000 per cent. In another commercial example, DPE quoted a high-tech process pump manufacturer that compared the total system cost in a production site needing 30 non-FFKM seal replacements per year with the same site requiring only eight Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer seal replacements per year. This resulted in total system costs savings of 27 per cent. According to DPE, the most dramatic impact on cost savings was demonstrated by the comparative lifetimes of non-FFKM O-rings and Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer O-rings in couplings. In the customer example given, actual seal lifetime was six months for non-FFKM, and three years for Kalrez®, leading to total system cost savings of 98 per cent. DPE supported these examples by industry data and performance comparisons of different seal materials, including PTFE, EPDM, FKM, and Kalrez® Spectrum™ 6375 and Kalrez® Spectrum™ 7075 perfluoroelastomer parts, in the most challenging chemical and hydrocarbon processes.
